monitoring port at the distal end to enable easy access to assess the hydraulic conditions within the
trench.
3.0 PRE-TREATMENT REQUIREMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
The primary factors that will affect the performance andlife expectancy of sewage treatment systems are
the quantity(flow) and quality(concentration)of the wastewater.Every possible effort must be made to
prevent greases and oils, food scraps, and other solid waste or toxic substances from entering the
wastewater system.Minimizing wastewater volume(flows)and proper maintenance will also improve
system performance.
The following is a summary of tips to minimize flow and waste strength, and enhance system
performance:
• Conserve water-low-flow fixtures and efficient use of water will reduce the hydraulic demand
on the septic system.
• Distribute water usage throughout the day as much as reasonably possible.
• Maintain all water fixtures in good working order(faucets, toilet valves, etc.)in order to
minimize inflow. Slow leaks can add up quickly. For example, a leaky faucet or toilet flowing at
a rate of one gallon per minute adds up to 1,440 gpd.
• Maintain all collection system components, including risers, piping, and fittings in good
condition in order to minimize the amount of infiltration from surface water or groundwater.
• Encourage staff, patrons, and guests to use the strainer in the sink(s)to capture food particles for
composting or disposal in the trash. +
• Wash greasy utensils only after scraping and wiping all possible residue into the trash.
• Encourage staff, patrons, and guests to place non-biodegradable items in the trash(i.e.,
disposable diapers,protective undergarments, so-called"flushable"wipes,feminine hygiene
products,cat litter,etc.).
• Minimize the use of potentially bio-toxic substances(cleaning agents, disinfectants, etc.).
• Do not use running water as a substitute for pipe insulation during cold weather. The system is
not designed to handle the excess water that results from this practice.
• Avoid substances that are promoted to"make your septic system work better,"such as cabbage,
yeast,or commercial septic tank additives(enzymes or bacteria).None of these products are
necessary and some may actually harm the system.
4.0 HEALTH AND SAFETY
Personnel should follow these basic sanitary precautions each time tests are performed that involve the
potential for direct contact with sewage:
• Always wear disposable gloves,
• Avoid direct contact with sewage,
• Promptly remove and launder any clothing that comes in direct contact with sewage,
• Wash any body parts that comein contact with sewage, using soap and plenty of warm water, and
CES-Albany,OR St.Innocent Winery and Tasting Room 0&M Manual
Doc:2018240028 St.Innocent Winery OM BTR May 2018 Page 2
