ROOF TRUSSES — HOUSE
As discussed above, under EXISTING BUILDINGS, the roof consists of plywood
sheathing over pre-fabricated gang-nail roof trusses. Grade stamp on the plywood
indicates 19/32" (5/8" nominal) thickness with 40/20 span rating. There is a mesh-
covered continuous ridge vent and continuous eave soffit vents. Wood surfaces appeared to be normal, with the
exception of some members with soot or smoke residue. There was a very slight
smoke odor in the air. [See Figures 32 & 33 below.]
Building standards have adjustment factors for sustained long term elevated
temperatures. They recognize the common condition where wood roof systems are
subject to diurnal temperature fluctuations due to solar radiation, including attics in
the desert reaching high temperatures; however, these are not applications requiring
adjustment of design values for temperature. Concern and consideration is especially
necessary for applications where wood framing is supporting sustained heavy loads
or is in a wet or high moisture content service condition and exposed to sustained
Report Date: March 28, 2021 Page 14 of 44
Site Visit Date: March 6, 2021 Taylor& Syfan Consulting Engineers, Inc.
