Soil moisture conditions generally preclude construction of the drainfield in the winter months. MAINTAIN PERMANENT ACCESS to septic tank for pumping and service. The septic tank should be pumped and inspected by a licensed septic tank pumping service before sludge and scum accumulations reach 30% of the tank liquid operating volume. Pumping every 3 to 5 years is an average interval. The septic tank is a reservoir for the solid materials in the sewage waste stream. Excessive accumulation of these solid materials in the septic tank will cause the solids to wash out of the tank and into the drainfield. This will cause irreversible damage to the drainfield and will eventually lead to a system failure. THE APPROVED SEPTIC SYSTEM AREA MUST BE PROTECTEDfrom any vehicular traffic, livestock and farming activities. Other activities such as excavating or filling, driveway placement, paving or other similar activities that alter the natural soil conditions will adversely affect the soil and the septic system function and lead to premature system failure. The area must not be subjected to excessive saturation due to artificial drainage of ground surfaces, driveways, building downspouts or other sources.
