CONCLUSION
Some of the space needs that are provided for in Courthouse Square represent
increase in square footage. As pointed out, however, much of the growth is oc
areas that are related to increased ridership and public uses. Perhaps the Distri
remiss in not pointing out that this facility is expected to handle 30 000 to 40
riders per daX--up from the 15,000 daily riders of today. In such a context, an i
size of a waiting room, for example, from today's need of 1,000 square feet to
sq.ft. provided in the Courthouse Square design is more easily understood. Th
shows ridership growth over the past ten years.
The types and sizes of spaces in Courthouse Square have been based upon the
expressed by the Board and managers of the District. These needs have been re
Board of Directors, and have been presented to the project architects for transl;
schematic designs. Programming standards that have been applied by the archi
taken into consideration the District's needs, inventory of spaces, and assumpt.
the function and design of the spaces. Their recommendation to the District an
10,100 square feet of administrative space on the second floor, and 6,137 squa
operations and customer service space on the first floor of the facility.
Salem Area Mass Transit District
Ridershiq Bv Year
4.200,000
4,000,000
3,800,000
3,G00.000
3,400,000
3.200,000
3,000,000 I
2.800,000
2,600,000
2,400,000
~sss
1998
1997
1996
1995
1994
1993
1992
19g~ Note: Ridershin deelines in 1994/95
1990
~ss9 resulted from a maior(are inerease
large
arring in
: has been
crease in the
he 2, 200
graph below
viewed by the
~tion into
e~t have
ons related to
ounts to
•e feet of
4
