Information from Sue McCracken October 1998 Marion County, Oregon, was established on 7uly 5, 1843, one of the first four counties created by the Provisional Government, 16 years before statehood in 1859. The county is governed under the provisions of ORS 203.010 through 203.190 by a Boazd of County Commissioners consisting of three elected members. He was named director of the Health Department in 1986 and served in that capacity until his appointment as acting county administrator in April 1998. The county administrator directs and coordinates the overall operational and financial ma.nagement of the county in accordance with policies set by the Board of County Commissioners and coordinates local and regional intergovernmental projects involving Marion County. He hold a masters degree in Social Work from the University of Denver and a BS in Social Science from Oregon State University. ~chael J. Hansen, County Counsel, was appointed in 1995 after serving as an assistant legal counsel since 1982. Prior to that time he was in private legal practice for five years after being admitted to the Oregon State Bar in 1977. He holds JD degree from Willamette University College of Law, an MA from the Monterey Institute of International Studies, and a BA from St. Martin's College, Olympia, Washington.
