DOWNTOWN TRANSIT CENTER
SITE SELECTION CRITERIA
7/25/95
Listed below are the various criteria that the technical task force has used to evaluate the
sites thus far. We've expanded the definition of each criterion to try and make them easier
to apply to the sites. You may think of other aspects of particular criterion that can be
used...coming up with your own aspects is fine, but please be sure to apply them equally
and consistently to each of the sites.
Throughout our discussions, we have been considering the potential of sites to
accommodate 20 to 24 buses at one time, off-street, requiring an area of at least one-half
block. We are asking that the full Advisory Committee use these criteria to review the
four sites that are remaining in consideration.
Customer Perception
- Safety...are the surrounding streets safe to cross...is the site dark and isolated...is
it a part of town people feel secure in...will there be other people around to help
make the area safe?
- Convenience...is the site close to shopping and work areas...are there good
pedestrian connections (e.g., connection to skywalks)...are there any barriers or
obstacles to cross, such as parking lots, crosswalk barricades, etc.?
- Amenities...any public facilities nearby, such as restrooms, phones, etc....are
surrounding areas well lit?
- Pedestrian facilities...are the nearby intersections signalized...crosswalks
available...sidewalks with curb cuts for disabled?
Ease of bus access/egress (traffic circulation--buses are 40' long, and up to 20 buses
would be entering/egiting heavy traffic in peak times)
- Avoid direct egress onto principal downtown arterials...does the site require the use
of Marion St., Center St., Liberiy St., or Front St?
- Minimal bus/pedestrian conflict....will buses have to cross busy sidewalks which
have heavy pedestrian volumes...are there site obstructions which will make it
difficult to see pedestriaas?
- Special signalization needed...will the site require any unusual traffic control
devices?
- Tuming radii/clearances...is there sufficient room at the site and on adjacent streets
that will be used to move buses into and out of the facility safely?
