Interior stairs of six <br />steps or more shall have the required lighting located in <br />the immediate vicinity of the top and bottom of the stairs. <br />and the required lighting shall be controlled from the top <br />and bottom of stairs provided the artificial light source is <br />located directly over each stair section. [Section 303.4] <br />GUARDRAILS AND HANDRAILS shall be able to resist a single <br />concentrated load of 200 pounds applied in any direction at <br />any point along the top. [Table 301.4] <br />GUARD~ILS, Porches. balconies or raised floor surfaces <br />located more than 30 inches above the floor or grade shall <br />have guardrails not less than 36 inches in height. Required <br />guardrail shall have intermediate rails or ornamental <br />closures which do not allow passage of an object 4 inches <br />or more in diameter. Horizontal spacing between the <br />vertical members in required gurardrails shall be a maximum <br />of 4 inches at the nearest point between the members. <br />[Sec. 315.3: 315.4] <br />HANDRAILS having a minimum and maximum height of 30 inches <br />and 38 inches, respectively, shall be provided on at least <br />one si de of stairways of more than three risers, All re- <br />quired handrails shall be continuous the full length of the <br />stairs. Ends shall be returned or shall terminate in newel <br />posts or safety terminals, Exception: Handrails may be <br />interrupted by a newel post at a turn, and the use of a <br />volute turnout or starting easing shall be allowed over the <br />lowest tread, [Sec, 315,1] <br />THE HANDGRIP PORTION of handrails shall not be less than <br />1 1/4 inches or more than 2 5/8 inches in cross-sectional <br />dimension, or the shape shall provide an equivalent gripping <br />surface. The handgrip portion shall have a smooth surface <br />and edges shall have a minimum radius of 1/8 inch. <br />[Section 315.2] <br />SMOKE DETECTORS shall be installed in each sleeping room, <br />outside of each separate sleeping area in the immediate <br />vicinity of the bedrooms and on each additional story of the <br />dwelling including basements. All detectors located outside <br />sleeping rooms shall be interconnected such that the <br />actuation of one alarm will actuate these alarms in the <br />individual unit and shall provide an alarm which will be <br />audible in all sleeping areas, Smoke detectors shall be <br />110 volt with battery back-up. [Sec, 316,1] <br />FIRESTOPPING shall be provided in the following locations. <br />1. In concealed spaces of stud walls, including furred <br /> spaces not to exceed 10 feet horizontally, and at the <br /> ceiling and floor level, <br />2, At all interconnections between concealed vertical and h <br /> horizontal spaces such as occur at soffits, drop or cove <br /> ceilings, etc, <br />3, In concealed spaces between stair stringers at the top <br /> and bottom of the run and wall cavities in line with the <br /> stringers: <br />4, At openings around vents, pipes, ducts, chimneys, fire- <br /> places at ceilings/floor level, w/non-combustible materials, <br /> VENT EXTENSION / ROOF, All plumbing vents, exhaust vents, <br /> and all air intakes, such as: bathroom or kitchen fans, <br /> woodstove or gas vents, air intakes, and all other such <br /> vents, shall be extended through the new roof system in an <br /> approved manner, Appropriate permits are required, <br /> HEATING APPLIANCES shall be accessible for inspection, <br /> service, repair and replacement without removing permanent <br /> construction, Unless otherwise specified, not less than <br />30 inches of working space and platform shall be provided in <br />front of the control side to service the appliance. <br />[Section 1205,1] <br />INSTALLATION OF HEATING and cooling appliances shall conform <br />to the conditions of their listing and label and the manu- <br />facturer's installation instructions. The manufacturer's <br />operating instructions shall remain attached to the <br />appliance.
