Horizontal spacing between the vertical members in required guardrails shall be a maximum of 4 inches at the nearest point between the members. Opening limitations for required guardrails on open sides of stairways are applicable above the second riser of the stair. [Sec, 315.3, 315.4] 17. SMOKE DETECTORS / ALTEP~qTIONS. When alterations, repairs or additions requiring a permit occur, or when sleeping rooms are added or created, the entire building shall be provided with smoke detectors located as required for new dwellings: the smoke detectors shall be interconnected and hard wi red. EXCEPTION: Detectors shall not be required to be inter- connected and hard wired where the alterations, repairs, or additions do not result in the exposure of electrical wiring by the removal of interior wall and ceiling finishes.
