Required <br /> guardrail shall have intermediate rails or ornamental <br /> closures which do not allow passage of an object 4 inches <br /> or more in diameter. Horizontal spacing between the <br /> vertical members in required gurardrails shall be a maximum <br /> of 4 inches at the nearest point between the members, <br /> [Sec, 315,3; 215.4] <br />16. GUARDRAIL ON STAIRS. Open sides of stairs with a total rise <br /> of more than 30 inches above the floor or grade below shall <br /> have guardrails not less than 34 inches in height measured <br /> vertically from the nosing of the treads. Guardrail shall <br /> have intermediate rails or ornamental closures which do <br /> not allow passage of an object 5 inches or more in diameter. <br /> Horizontal spacing between the vertical members in required <br /> guardrails shall be a maximum of 4 inches at the nearest <br /> point between the members. Opening limitations for required <br /> guardrails on open sides of stairways are applicable above <br /> the second riser of the stair. [Sec, 315.3, 315.4] <br />17. SMOKE DETECTORS / ALTEP~qTIONS. When alterations, repairs or <br /> additions requiring a permit occur, or when sleeping rooms <br /> are added or created, the entire building shall be provided <br /> with smoke detectors located as required for new dwellings: <br /> the smoke detectors shall be interconnected and hard wi red. <br /> EXCEPTION: Detectors shall not be required to be inter- <br /> connected and hard wired where the alterations, repairs, or <br /> additions do not result in the exposure of electrical wiring <br /> by the removal of interior wall and ceiling finishes. <br /> [Sec, 316.1.1] <br />18. SMOKE DETECTORS shall be installed in each sleeping room. <br /> outside of each separate sleeping area in the immediate <br /> vicinity o¢ the bedrooms and on each additional story of the <br /> dwelling including basements, All detectors located outside <br /> sleeping rooms shall be interconnected such that the <br /> actuation of one alarm will actuate these alarms in the <br /> individual unit and shall provide an alarm which will be <br /> audible in all sleeping areas. Smoke detectors shall be <br /> 110 volt with batter back-up, [Sec. 316.1] <br />19, ENERGY PATH #1 is based on R-21 wall insulation, R-25 under- <br /> floor insulation. R-30 vaulted ceiling insulation, R-38 flat <br /> ceiling insulation, R-15 below grade wood. concrete or <br /> masonry walls, R-15 slab floor edge insulation, R-8 forced <br /> air duct insulation, 0.40 U-value window class, 0.50 U-value <br /> skylight class, 0.54 U-value main entry door, (with a max- <br /> imum area of 24 square feet) all other exterior doors, in- <br /> cluding the door between the heated dwelling and the un- <br /> heated garage, 0,20 U-value. <br /> <br /> <br />
