?. ATTIC VENTS. Provide screened attic vents with a net free area of 1/150 of the attic area. (or <br />1/300 if between 50 and 80% of required area is ventilatom in the upper po~ticn of the affic and <br />tocated at least 3 feet above eave or cornice vents. As an alternative, install a 4 mil vapor barrier <br />on the warm side of the ceiling. [Sec. 806.2]. <br /> <br />8. THE GARAGE shall be separated from the dwelling and its attic area by means of 1/2-inch <br />gypsum board applied to the garage side of the wall. Where the separation is a floor-ceiling <br />assembly, the structure supporting the separation shall be protected by 1/2-inch gypsum board or <br />equivalent. The door between the garage and residence shall be equipped with solid wood doom <br />not less than 1 3/8 inches in thickness or 20-minute ~re rated, or equivalent. [Sec. 309.1,309.2] <br /> <br />9. BIDC00148 ENCLOSED ACCESSIBLE SPACE under stairs shall have walls and soffits <br />protected on the enclosed side with 1/2 inch gypsum board. [Sec. 310.3] <br /> <br />10. ALL INTERIOR STAIRS shall be provided with a minimum of 60 watts of incandescent light or <br />other artificial light source rated at a minimum of 850 lumens. Interior stairs of sixsteps or more <br />shall have the required lighting located in the immediate vicinity of the top and bottom of the stairs, <br />and the required lighting shall be controlled from the top and bottom of each stair without traversing <br />any step of the stair. Exception: An artificial light source is not required at the top and bottom of <br />stairs provided the artificial light source is located directly over each stair section. [Sec. 303.4] <br /> <br />11. GUARDRAILS. Porches, balconies or raised floor surfaces located more than 30 in. above <br />the floor or grade shall have guardrail not less than 36 inches in height. Required guardrail shall <br />have intermediate rails or ornamental closures which will not allow passage of an object 6 in. or <br />more in diameter. Horizontal spacing between the vertical members in required guardrails shall be <br />a ma~dmum of 4 inches at the nearest point between the members. [Sec. 315.3,315.4] <br /> <br />12. SMOKE DETECTORS shall be installed in each sleeping room, outside of each separate <br />sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms and on each additional story of the dwelling <br />including basements. All detectors shall be interconnected such that the actuation of one alarm <br />will actuate all the alarms in the individual unit and shall provide an alarm which will be audible in <br />all sleeping areas. [Sec. 316.1] Smoke detectors shall be 110v with battery back-up. [Sec. 3t6.2] <br /> <br />]3. FIRESTOPPING shall be provided in the following locations: <br />1) In concealed spaces of stud walls, including furred spaces not to e~;eed 10 feet horizontally, <br />and at the ceiling and floor level. <br />2) At all interconnections between concealed vertical and horizontal spaces such as occur at <br />soffits, drop or cove ceilings, etc. <br />3) In concealed spaces between stair stringers at the top and bottom of the run and wall ca~ies in <br />line with the stringers; <br />4) At openings around vents, pipes, ducts, chimneys and fireplaces at ceiling and floor level, with <br />noncombustible materials. [Sec. 602.7] <br /> <br />14. WATER HEATERS shall be anchored or strapped to the building to resist horizontal <br />displacement due to earthquake motion. [Sec. 510.5 Uniform Plumbing Code] <br /> <br />15. HEATING AND COOLING appliances located in a garage shall be protected from impact by <br />automobiles. Appliances that generate a glow, spark of flame capable of igniting gasoline vapors <br />located in a garage shall be installed with burners, bumer ignition devices or heating elements and <br />switches at least 18 inches above the floor level.
