?. ATTIC VENTS. Provide screened attic vents with a net free area of 1/150 of the attic area. (or 1/300 if between 50 and 80% of required area is ventilatom in the upper po~ticn of the affic and tocated at least 3 feet above eave or cornice vents. As an alternative, install a 4 mil vapor barrier on the warm side of the ceiling. [Sec. 806.2]. 8. THE GARAGE shall be separated from the dwelling and its attic area by means of 1/2-inch gypsum board applied to the garage side of the wall. Where the separation is a floor-ceiling assembly, the structure supporting the separation shall be protected by 1/2-inch gypsum board or equivalent. The door between the garage and residence shall be equipped with solid wood doom not less than 1 3/8 inches in thickness or 20-minute ~re rated, or equivalent. [Sec. 309.1,309.2] 9. BIDC00148 ENCLOSED ACCESSIBLE SPACE under stairs shall have walls and soffits protected on the enclosed side with 1/2 inch gypsum board. [Sec. 310.3] 10. Interior stairs of sixsteps or more shall have the required lighting located in the immediate vicinity of the top and bottom of the stairs, and the required lighting shall be controlled from the top and bottom of each stair without traversing any step of the stair. Exception: An artificial light source is not required at the top and bottom of stairs provided the artificial light source is located directly over each stair section. [Sec. 303.4] 11. GUARDRAILS. Porches, balconies or raised floor surfaces located more than 30 in. above the floor or grade shall have guardrail not less than 36 inches in height. Required guardrail shall have intermediate rails or ornamental closures which will not allow passage of an object 6 in. or more in diameter. Horizontal spacing between the vertical members in required guardrails shall be a ma~dmum of 4 inches at the nearest point between the members. [Sec. 315.3,315.4] 12. SMOKE DETECTORS shall be installed in each sleeping room, outside of each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms and on each additional story of the dwelling including basements. All detectors shall be interconnected such that the actuation of one alarm will actuate all the alarms in the individual unit and shall provide an alarm which will be audible in all sleeping areas. [Sec. 316.1] Smoke detectors shall be 110v with battery back-up. [Sec. 3t6.2] ]3. FIRESTOPPING shall be provided in the following locations: 1) In concealed spaces of stud walls, including furred spaces not to e~;eed 10 feet horizontally, and at the ceiling and floor level. 2) At all interconnections between concealed vertical and horizontal spaces such as occur at soffits, drop or cove ceilings, etc. 3) In concealed spaces between stair stringers at the top and bottom of the run and wall ca~ies in line with the stringers; 4) At openings around vents, pipes, ducts, chimneys and fireplaces at ceiling and floor level, with noncombustible materials. [Sec. 602.7] 14. WATER HEATERS shall be anchored or strapped to the building to resist horizontal displacement due to earthquake motion. [Sec. 510.5 Uniform Plumbing Code] 15. HEATING AND COOLING appliances located in a garage shall be protected from impact by automobiles. Appliances that generate a glow, spark of flame capable of igniting gasoline vapors located in a garage shall be installed with burners, bumer ignition devices or heating elements and switches at least 18 inches above the floor level.
