16, <br /> <br />EVERY SLEEPING ROOM shall have at least one operable window approved for <br /> emergency egress or rescue. The window sill height shall not be mors than 44 <br /> inches above the floor. The minimum net clear opening is 5.7 square feet. The <br /> minimum net clear opening height shall be 22 inches. The minimum net clear <br /> opening width shall be 20 inches. Exception: Grade floor windows may have a <br /> minimum net clear opening of 5 square feet. <br /> [Sec. 310.2, 310.2.1] <br /> <br />17. ENCLOSED ACCESSIBLE SPACE under stairs shall have walls and soffits protected on <br />the enclosed side with 1/2 inch gypsum board. [Sec. 310.3] <br /> <br />18. HANDRAILS having a minimum and maximum height of 30 inches and 38 inches, <br />respectively, shall be provided on at least one side of stai~vays of mora than three risers. All <br />required handrails shall be continuous the full length of the stairs. Ends shall be returned or shall <br />terminate in newel posts or safety terminals. Exception: Handrails may be interrupted by a newel <br />post et a turn, and the use of a volute turnout or starting easing shall be allowed over the lowest <br />tread. [Sec. 315.1] <br />THE HANDGRIP PORTION of handrails shall not be less than 1 1/4 {nches or mora than 2 5/8 <br />inches in cross-sectional dimension, or the shape shall provide an equivalent gripping surface. <br />The handgrip portion shall have a smooth surface and edges shall have a minimum radius of 1/8 <br />inch. [Sec. 315.2] <br />GUARDRAILS. Pomhes, balconies or raised floor surfaces located mora than 30 in. above the <br />floor or grade shall have guardrai/not less than 36 inches in height. Required guardrail shall <br />have intermediate rails or ornamental closures which will not allow passage of an object 6 in. or <br />mom in diameter. Horizontal spacing between the vertical members in required guardrails shall <br />be a maximum of 4 inches at the nearest point between the members. [Sec. 315.3,315.4] <br />GUARDRAIL ON STAIRS. Open sides of stairs with a total rise of mora than 30 inches above <br />the floor or grade below shall have guardrails not less than 34 inches in height measured <br />vertically from the nosing of the treads. Guardrail shall have intermediate rails or ornamental <br />closures which will not allow passage of an object 6 in. or mora in diameter. Horizontal spacing <br />between the vertical members in required guardrails shall be a maximum of 4 inches at the <br />nearest point between the members. [Sec. 315.3, 315.4] <br />HORIZONTAL SPACING between the vertical members in required guardrails at open sides of <br />stainvays, raised floor areas, balconies and porches shall be a maximum of 4 inches at the <br />nearest point between the members. [Sec. 315.4] <br />GUARDRAILS AND HANDRAILS shall be able to resist a single concentrated load of 200 <br />pounds applied in any direction at any point along the top. [Table 301.4] <br /> <br />19. iNSTALLATION OF HEATING and cooling appliances shall conform to the conditions of <br />their listing and label and the manufacturer's installation instructions. The manufacturer's <br />operating instructions shall remain attached to the appl/anco. Have the installation instructions <br />available for the building inspector at the time of inspection. [Sec. 1307.1] <br /> <br />20. WATER HEATERS shall be anchored or strapped to the building to resist horizontal <br />displacement due to earthquake motion.
