Direct heat
from the fire to the sink drains would need to pass through this assembly.
Just to the North in the Northwest Bedroom, there were reportedly some
plastic objects sitting on or near the interior window sill during the wildfire which
softened or melted enough to permanently change shape. At this location the only
thermal resistance consists of two panes of glass and a thin layer of air between
them. An exterior wall such as at the Master Bathroom sinks is substantially more
resistant to heat transfer than a window, being on the order of 5 times more.
Many 'plastic' consumer products are made from polystyrene or polyethylene,
which begin to soften and melt at 120°F to 150°F. Polyethylene bags for example
can shrivel at 120°F and harder polyethylene products like bottles or buckets can
soften and melt at 150°F. PVC pipe begins to melt at about 176°F to 185°F, while
UHMW/HD polyethylene pipe melts closer to 375°F. Based on the location of the sink
drain pipes in the cabinet behind the exterior wall, it seems unlikely that the washers
or gaskets in the connections could have been heated enough to be damaged. It
does however seem likely that plastic objects on or near the window sill of the
Northwest Bedroom could have been heated enough to cause them to melt.
[See Figure 76 below.] Sink drain repairs should be performed by a licensed plumber.
nY, li , \
/' ;
MELTED PLASTIC BALL (FLAT BOTTOM) [FIGURE 76]
Report Date: March 28, 2021 Page 30 of 44
Site Visit Date: March 6, 2021 Taylor& Syfan Consulting Engineers, Inc.
