49930 N Santiam Hwy SE SITE VISIT REPORT
Idanha, OR 97350-9503 State Farm Claim No. 37-11 K4-75P
2. GARAGE - MEZZANINE FLOOR JOISTS
As discussed above, under EXISTING BUILDINGS, the mezzanine floor consists
of plywood sheathing over 2x10 wood joists @ 16" on-center spacing. Grade stamps
were on the framing, indicating 3/4" nominal plywood (0.719" min.) 48/24 span
rating, and Douglas-Fir No. 2 joists.
The Policyholder indicated concern with the West mezzanine floor joists, which
are below the playroom, where there appeared to be soot on some of the joists. He
pointed out a joist that the Hygienist had taken a sample from. The scope of this
report does not include hygiene, toxins, chemicals, or similar health hazards - those
issues are being addressed by others. The scope of this report concerns the structural
safety of the building and its components with respect to heat from the wildfire.
Upon observation, soot that may be on the wood is not detrimental to the
strength or structural safety of the joists for support of loads. It was possible to
scrape the very thin layer off with a fingernail. The soot may be removed through
sanding or similar means, or encapsulated, it ---- '
the Hygienist or others. [See Figures 26 & 2'
prctool( 9015 116
44 104) (f"
LOW " e ti)6
.15
WEST MEZZANINE, AND SOOT OP
The Policyholder also pointed out cracking in one of the 2x10 floor joists. It
consists of discontinuous cracks (or "checks") near the centroid of the depth of the
joist on one side only, along the full length of the joist. These cracks are due to
where the 2x10 was cut from within the log, with differential shrinkage amongst the
growth rings as the moisture content decreased. This is not uncommon and is not a
structural concern. [See Figure 28 below.]
I told the Policyholder that I would analyze the mezzanine floor joists for him,
so that he would have a sense of their collective capacity or safety.
