When I ran for city council two years ago, I promised
to work on getting funds to widen Kuebler, ensure that Wes Bennett Park
went from a proposed park to a developed park, and dedicate additional
resources to increase our police force.

We now have dedicated funding for Kuebler working
it’s way through Congress, construction of Wes Bennett Park will
start in the Spring/Summer of 2006 (as part of 4 parks that will be built
in the next 3 years), and this Council has added 10 additional police
officers. We are well on our way to obtaining the Mayor’s goal of
having Salem once again be recognized as an All-American city.

Looking at the next four years it is clear that our
part of Salem will rank only behind West Salem as the location that people
want to raise their families in. Our transportation system needs to be
designed wisely and integrated well to provide convenient movement of
    people, goods, and services.

On a broader basis, Salem’s median family income
level needs to increase at a rate substantially higher than the inflation
adjusted rate. City Council can play its part by investing in the resources
unique to our area (and thus unable to be outsourced) that industry needs.
I will work to see that we get a maximum return on our community
    investment.

Finally, our planning codes are old and piecemealed
together. They leave a great deal of room for interpretation and
can’t be easily understood. We need to clean up this process so that
folks understand what can and can’t be developed around them.
