<br />Marion County Class Specification BulletinPage of <br />>>> <br />Shelter Technician <br />Class Code: <br />128 <br />Bargaining Unit: 06 - Marion County Employees <br />Association <br />MARION COUNTY <br />SALARY RANGE <br />$17.52 - $23.44 Hourly <br />OVERVIEW: <br />FLSAEEOCDepartment <br />: Non-Exempt : 08 Service Maintenance : Community Services <br />GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES <br />Independently and in cooperation performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled work essential for the <br />operation of the Marion County Dog Services using recognized best animal sheltering practices and <br />established practice and procedures; performs related duties as assigned; will need to work a flexible <br />schedule that includes weekends and holidays. <br />SUPERVISION RECEIVED <br />Works under the general supervision of the Shelter Operations Manager or designee as assigned by the <br />superior who assigns work, sets goals, inspects results, and reviews performance for compliance with <br />shelter policy and procedures, national standards of best practices, laws and regulations. <br />SUPERVISION EXERCISED <br />Supervision exercised is not typically a responsibility of positions in this classification; however, positions <br />may provide training and give instruction to volunteers, inmate work crew and other shelter staff. <br />DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS <br />This is an entry to mid-level classification. The shelter technician ensures the proper handling, care, and <br />treatment of dogs in the shelter. The Shelter Technician differs from the Veterinary Technician in that it <br />does not provide advanced veterinary care or make medical decisions, but may assist upon direction of <br />the veterinarian or Veterinary Technician. <br />EXAMPLES OF DUTIES - DUTIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED <br />TO THE FOLLOWING: <br />1.Receive dogs brought to the shelter. Weigh, examine, and observe animals to detect signs of <br />illness, disease, or injury. Handle, control, and administer routine vaccinations, implant microchip <br />and/or oral medications to dogs. Maintain accurate written and electronic records. <br />2.Euthanize dogs according to shelter protocols and guidelines, in keeping with best practices, while <br />maintaining the records of euthanized animals and records of controlled substances used. <br />3.Participates in the maintenance of the dog shelter; cleans and disinfects dog kennels when work <br />crews are not available. <br />4.Responds to questions and inquiries from citizens regarding the care of animals.
