1. Use a 3/16-inch hex key to remove the stainless steel bolts from the riser lid at the designated
end of each tank.
2. Lay a board across the riser to provide a consistent reference point for measurements.
3. Measurements can be made using a pole(threaded 3/4-inch Schedule 80 PVC works well)with a
"foot" (threaded plate)mounted on the end. This is commonly called a"sludge judge."
4. Rest the plate end of the pole on top of the scum and mark the pole with a grease pencil where it
intersects the pole.
5. Push the pole up and down slightly to determine the bottom of the scum.
6. Mark the pole, remove it,and measure the distance between the marks. This is the thickness of
the scum layer.
7. Record this measurement in the appropriate space on Form 5.
8. Push the pole back down through the scum and through the liquid layer until you feel an increase
in resistance near the bottom.
9. Move the pole up and down slightly to determine the top of the sludge.Mark the pole and push it
down to the bottom of the tank.
10. Mark the pole again.
11. Remove the pole and measure the distance between the marks. This is the thickness of the sludge
layer.
12. Record this measurement on Form 5.
13. Replace and secure the lids.
14. Repeat this process for all remaining tanks.
15. If any of the measurements are greater than the maximum values shown for each respective tank
in Table 3,then schedule the tank for pumping.
9.2 Pump and Cycle Calibration
As long as the float switches have not been replaced or adjusted, and are still functioning properly, the
assumed gallons per cycle will remain the same.Adjustment of the floats should only be performed by a
qualified individual with concurrence from Marion County and the designer. However, the actual
performance of the pumps is likely to change with time and they will need to be calibrated annually.
The pumps and meters can be calibrated using the following steps:
1. Use a 3/16-inch hex key to remove the stainless steel bolts from the fiberglass lid at the outlet
end of the surge dosing tank to reveal the screened pump vault, pumps, and float control
assembly.
2. Close the low pressure gate valve at the inlet of the tank(where equipped).
3. Open the main control panel to allow ready access to the manual controls.
4. Record the meter readings prior to starting the calibration procedure.
5. Flip the hand-off-automatic(HOA)switches to the OFF position.
6. Close the low pressure gate valve at the inlet end of the tank.
CES-Albany,OR St.Innocent Winery and Tasting Room 0&M Manual
Doc:2018240028 St.Innocent Winery OM BTR May 2018 Page 7
