<br />Higher Education
<br />The County has several quality institutions of higher learning. Salem is the home of Willamette University, founded
<br />in 1842. The University is located on a beautiful campus in central Salem, adjacent to the capital grounds. The
<br />University is noted for its outstanding law school. Other educational institutions within the County include
<br />Chemeketa Community College, Western Baptist Bible College, and an extension center of the Oregon State System
<br />of Higher Education. Western Oregon University is located in Polk County, approximately 15 miles west of Salem.
<br />Tokyo International University has a campus in Salem associated with Willamette University.
<br />Transportation
<br />Interstate 5 from Seattle to Los Angeles runs through the County at Salem. Other significant highways include U.S.
<br />Highway 99 East from the north and U.S. Highway 22 which joins US 18 to run from the Pacific Coast to the
<br />Cascades.
<br />Rail service is provided by Union Pacific and Burlington Northern railroads. Amtrak provides passenger service
<br />through its station in Salem. Greyhound provides service from terminals in Salem and Woodburn including eight
<br />buses north, eight south and one east daily. Evergreen Stage Lines provides a charter bus service.
<br />The Salem Municipal Airport (McNary Field) is a general aviation airport with 57,000 operations a year. It can
<br />accommodate business jets and commercial aircraft as large as the Boeing 737. A passenger shuttle is based at the
<br />airport to provide transportation to Portland International Airport. A smaller general aviation airport near Aurora in
<br />northern Marion County has the highest use rate of any state-operated general aviation airport in Oregon.
