As the home of the state capital, the county has a steady economic base in government. <br />Willamette University is located in Sa1em and Chemeketa Community College has both is main <br />campus and a subsidiary campus in the county. Manufacturing has increased significantly in recent <br />years. Agricultural processing and farm work a.re strong seasonal components of the economy. <br />With wineries, the Willamette River, Silver Falls State Park, Detroit Lake recreational area and <br />portions of the Willamette National Forest within its boundaries, tourism is a growing source of <br />income. Tourism is e~ected to increase significantly in the county after the opening of the <br />Oregon Garden near Silverton in 2000. <br />Transportation <br />Interstate 5 from Seattle to Los Angeles runs through Marion County at Sa1em. Other significant <br />highways include U.S. H'ighway 99 East from the north and U.S. Highway 22 which joins US 18 <br />to run from the Pacific Coast to the Cascades. <br />Ra.il service is provided by Union Pacific and Burlington Northern railroads. Amtrak provides <br />passenger service through its station in Salem. Greyhound provides service from terminals in <br />Sa1em and Woodburn including eight buses north, eight south and one east daily. Evergreen <br />Stage Lines provides a charter bus service. <br />The Sa1em Municipal Airport (McNary Field) is a general aviation airport with 57,000 operations <br />a year. It can accommodate business jets and commercial aircraft as large as the Boeing 737. A <br />passenger shuttle is based at the airport to provide transportation to Portland Intemational <br />Airport.
