In an email from John Knapton, he
indicates tha,t: "The norma! practice is to screed and compact the sand, leaving height for a quarter of an inch
of additional sand to be scr~eded than left loose. The pavers are installed into the Ioose sand then vibrated -
the loose sand partlr ertters the joints and the ~emainder compacu. This method avoids the problem of
differential relative compaction and therefore unhevenness in the surface." Can you let us know what this will
do to Shonnert's price. ~
~ With respect to the grade problem, he agrees that 4" of sand under the pavers is to much. Ideally ic should be
I.25" compacted. We could go up to 3" but not prEferably. The better solution is to build up using a dry
pack consisting of cement added to the sand in feathered wedges. The ratio of sand to cement would be I 5
to l_ The top I.25" should be sand only.
cc: Craig Lewis, MMDC
John Wfiittington, SAMTD
Billy Wasson, Marion County
Please calf us if you have any quesrJons on the docume~t(s) or if there are arry pages r„Issing.
By: Leonard Lodder, A_I.A.
File No.: 9B2B-3D
