SALEM COURTHOUSE SQUARE, INC. <br />DEMOLTTION <br />1997 <br />1.1 SUMMARY <br />SECTION 01568 <br />ENVIROI~IMEN'TAL <br />PROTECTION <br />PAGE 1 OF 5 <br />A. Section includes requirements for control of environmental pollution and damage that the <br />Contractor is required to program for in consideration of air, waster, and land, and includes <br />management of visual aesthetics, noise, solid waste, radiant energy and radioactive materials, as <br />well as other pollutants and resources encountered by or generated by the Contractor. Control <br />measures specified are considered an obligation of the Contractor with the costs included within the <br />various contract items of work. <br />B. For the purpose of this specification, environmental pollution and damage is defined as the <br />presence of chemical, physical, or biological elements or agents which adversely affect human <br />health or welfare; unfavorably alter ecological balances of importance to human life; effect other <br />species of important to man; or degrade the utility of the environment for aesthetic, cultural and <br />historical purposes. <br />C . Definitions of Pollutants: <br />1. Sedimen~ Soil and other debris that has been eroded and transported by runoff water. <br />2. Solid Waste: Rubbish, debris, garbage, and other discarded solid materials resulting from <br />industrial, commercial, and agricultural operations and from community activities. <br />3. Rubbish: A variety of combustible and noncombustible wastes such as paper, boxes, and <br />glass and crockery, metal and lumber scrap, tin cans, and bones. <br />4. Debris: Includes both combustible and noncombustible wastes, such as leaves, and tree <br />trimmings, ashes, and waste materials that results from construction or maintenance and repair <br />work. <br />5. Chemical Waste: Includes petroleum products, bituminous materials, salts, acids, alkalies, <br />herbicides, pesticides, organic chemicals, and inorganic wastes. <br />6. Sanita.ry Wastes: <br />a. Sewage: That which is considered as domestic sanitary sewage. Human and animal <br />waste. <br />b. Garbage: Refuse and scraps resulting from preparation, cooking, dispensing, and <br />consumption of food. <br />7. Noise and Vibration: Exceeding limits established by the Contract Documents, and otherwise <br />determined or perceived to be excessive or detrimental to Owner's occupancy of adjacent and <br />nearby facilities. <br />1.2 QUALITY CONTROL <br />A. Establish and maintain quality control for the environmental protection of all items set forth herein. <br />B. Record on daily rEports any problems in complying with laws, regulations and ordinances and <br />corrective action taken. <br />
