The handgrip portion of handrails shall be <br />not more than 2 5/8 inches in cross-sectional dimension, or <br />the shape shall provide an equivalent gripping surface. <br />Handrails shall be mounted between a minimum of 20 inches <br />and a maximum of 28 inches. They shall be continuous the <br />full length of the stairs, Ends shall be returned or shall <br />terminate in newel posts or safety terminals. (R-214.1) <br />A minimum 3' x 3' landing shall be required on each side of <br />an egress door, The floor or landing shall not be more <br />than one and one-half inches lower than the top of the <br />threshold. (R-212) Exception: The landing on the <br />exterior side of an exterior doorway shall not be more than <br />8 and 1/4 inches below the top of the threshold. <br />Porches, balconies or raised floor surfaces located more <br />than 30 in, above the floor or grade shall have guardrail <br />not less than 26 inches in height. Required guardrail shall <br />have intermediate rails or ornamental closures which will <br />not allow passage of an object 6 in. or more in diameter. <br />Horizontal spacing between the vertical members in required <br />guardrails shall be a maximum of 4 inches at the nearest <br />point between the members, (R-214.2) <br />bApproved as a replacement dwelling.
