A one-hour fire-resistive occupancy separation is required between the garage and the house, All openings in the separation shall be protected by a fire assembly having a one-hour fire-protection rating. 5. Walls and floors separating dwelling units in the same building shall be of not less than one-hour fire-resistive construction. 6, Draft stops shall be installed in the attics, mansards. overhangs, false fronts set out from walls and similar concealed spaces of apartments and motels. Such draft stops shall be above and in line with walls separating individual dwelling units and guest rooms from each other and from other uses. 7, Sleeping rooms require at least one operable exterior window or door approved for emergency escape or rescue and providing a net clear opening of not less than 5.7 sq. ft. The minimum net clear opening height dimension shall be 24 inches. The minimum net clear width dimension shall be 20 inches. When windows are provided as a means of escape or rescue, they shall have a finished sill height of not more than 44 inches above the floor. 8, The rise of every step in a stairway shall be not less than 4 lnches nor greater than 7 inches. The run shall be not less than 11 inches as measured horizontally between the vertical planes of the furthermOst projection of adjacent treads. The largest tread run or riser height within any flight of stairs shall not exceed the smallest by more than 3/8 inch. 9. Stairways shall have handrails on each side. The hand grip portion of handrails shall be not less than i 1/2 inches nor more than 2 inches in cross-sectional dimension or the shape shall provide an equivalent gripping surface. Handrails shall be between 34 and 38 inches above the nosing of treads. They shall be continuous the full length of the stairs, Ends shall extend not less than 6 inches beyond the top and bottom risers and be returned or terminate in newel posts or safety terminals. 10. SMOKE DETECTORS shall be installed in each sleeping room, outside of each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms and on each additional story of the dwelling including basements. All detectors located outside sleeping rooms shall be interconnected such that the actuation of one alarm wlll actuate these alarms in the individual unit and shall provide an alarm which will be audible in all sleeping areas. Smoke detectors shall be 110 volt with batter back-up. 11. SMOKE D~TECTOR / POWER. In new construction, the required smoke detectors shall receive their primary power from the bullding wiring when such wiring is served from a commercial source, and when primary power is interrupted, shall receive power from a battery, Wiring shall be permanent and not switched, Smoke detectors shall be permitted to be battery operated when installed in existing buildings without commercial power or in buildings which undergo alterations.
