OREGON
cOMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
DEPARTMENT

The following information describes the operation and maintenance needs of
your Sand Filter System.

The septic tank acts aa a separation chamber for both settleable and floating
solid material. The solids are retained in the tank and the li¢/~id is allowed
to flow through the tank. The tank efficiency is partly dependent its capaci-
ty. The maintenance of a Septic tank serving a Sand Filter system must be
pumped a minimum o~ once every four (4) years. The purpose is to keep the
level of solid material in the tank at a level that will not allow the flow of
solids out of the tank and into the Sand Filter unit. A ~otSf~ation letter
will be sent based on ghe sys~e~ completion date of ~/~/q~ .

The second tank in the syste~ is a dosing tank which sontains the effluent
pump aD,status. The system is set to discharge a~roxim~tely ninety (90)
gallons p~r cycle for a home$ite with a sewage flow up to 4~0 gallons per day.
The pump station should be ins~eutsd a~d tested yearly. Any changes in
operating level, leaks in valves er piping, presence of foreign matter, etc.
should be corrected, If ~our SyStem contains a dosin~ siphon instead of a
pump, the same instructions apply.as ~oted above.

The pump/siphon is ~urrounded by a small diameter mesh screen. It's purpose is
to restrict the flow of suspended solid material to the pu~. If allowed to
pa~s through the pump, this material could slcg the distribution system in the
Sand Filter and ca=se a failure in the system. The screen should be inspected
yearly and cleaned as needed.

A garbage disposal in no2 reccm~aended, If you have or plan to add one to your
kitchen, ea~tion should be e~ercise~ with its use. The added wastes can
contribute to system p~rformance problems. The septic tank should be pumped
more often ~ith a disposal on the syst~, possibly every two (2) years.

There are several things you should no~ do to a sand Filter:
1. Flush unusual or' high strength wastes such as photographic chem.icals Or
water softener backwash.

Ignore leaks in plumbing, espeelally toilets. The additional water flow
can cause system failure.

significantly change the uae of the syst~ thereby increasing the waste
strength or volume such aS adult foster care, beauty salons, etc..

Use chemical or biological septic treatment~ as these can have an
adverse effect on aystem~omponents and/or effluent Characteristics.
