.Marion County

OREGON
COMMUNITY DE'VELOt:~4ENT
DEPARTMENT

The following information describes the o~eration and maintenance needs of
your ~and Filter

The septic tank acts as a separation ch~er for both settleable and floating
solid material. The solids are retained in the tank and ~he liquid is allowed
to flow through the tank. The tank efficiency is partly del~endent its capaci-
ty. The maintenance o~ a eep~ie ta~k serving a Sand Filter system ~ust be
pumped a minimum of once every four (4) years. Th~ purpose is to
level of solid material in the tank at a level ~hat will not al%0w the fl~w of
solids out of the tank an~ i~to the Sand Filter unit. ~ no~ification letter
will be sent baaed on the system completion date of /~/~/~ ,,, -

The second tank in the system is a dosing tank which ec~tains the effluent
pump aDparatus. The system is set to discharge approximately ninety (90)
galloes per ~yele for a homesite with a sewage flow up to 450 gallons ~r day.
The ~mp station should be inspected and tested y~a=ly. Any ~hanges in
operating level, leaks in valves er pi~ing~ ~reSen~e of foseign matter, etc.
should be corrected. If you= ~y~tem con%sins a dosing siphon instead of a
pump, the same instructions apply as noted above.

The pump/siphon is surrounded by a ~mall diameter mesh screen. It'~ purpose is
to restrict the flow of suspended solid material to the pump. If allowed to
pass through the pump, thim material could clog the distribution system in the
Sand Filter and cause a failure in the system. The screen should be inspected
yearly and cleaned as needed.

A garbage di~pesal in not recommended. Ii you have or plan to add one to yoor
kitchen, caution should be exercised with its use. The added wastes can
sontribute to system performance problems. The septic tank should be pumped
more often with a disposal on %he System, possibly every two (2) yea~e.

The~e
1.

are s~veral thing~ you should not do to a Sand Filter:
Flush unn~ual of high strength wastes suoh as photographic chemicals or
water ~oftener backwash.

Ignore leaks in plumbing, especially toilets. Th~ additional water flow
can ca~ae system failure.

Significantly change the use of the system thereby increasing the waste
strength Or volume such as adult forte= Care, beauty s&lOnS~ etc..

Use chemical or biological septic treatments as these Gan have an
adverse effect on system ec~peneets and/or effluent characteristics,
