Marion County

OREGON
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
DEPARTMENT

JAMES B. BURBY, FACILITIES ENGINEER
C/O WILLAMETTE NATIONAL FORe'ST
P.O. BOX ~0607
EUGENE~ OREGON 97440

SUBJ: SITE EVALUATION FOR SUBSURFACE SEWAGE DISPOSAL
UPPER ARM PICNIC PARK, DETROIT RANGER DISTRICT

I visited this property 9/18/91 and COmpleted the evalua-
tion for restroom facilities using subsurface sewage
disposal at the Upper Arm Picnic Park, soil conditions
appear suitable to consider the proposed site for stan-
dard septic system drainfield installations if there is
enough space to construct the drainfleld. The soil con-
sists of a deep well drained gravelly loam over coarse
sandy gravels.'With this type of soil 75 lineal feet of
dratnfiel~ is normally required per 150 gallons of sewage
flow with sewage strength similar to normal household
wastewater. The sewage strength might vary considerably
for the park restrooms, so to properly establish the
appropriate system we should have actual waste strength
data from a similar facility.

I doubt that there is enough area to site the original
and a complete backup (replacement) system using standard
system construction within the site I reviewed, An alter-
native might be the san~ filter system which requires
somewhat less drainfield. A sand filter system designed
to process over 600 gallons of daily sewage flow must be
submitted to the Sta~e Department of Environmental Quali-
ty for plan review. ~opefully, there is enough space to
construct the original standard System.

Please contact our office with any information you may
have pertaining to effluent sewage strength at any simi-
lar park facilities. If none is available, the D.E.Q.
should be able to provide some guidance to establish a
design factor. A field stakeout may be necessary to
confirm the appropriate systems.

Senator Building 220 High Street NE ' S,',lern, Oregon 97301-3670
