In lieu of fire sprinklers the following site considerations, fire/life/safety&construction
upgrades are proposed:
-the building has yards in excess of 60'on 3 sides,20' on the east wall of Phase I.
-the building has(4)accessible exits and a total of(7)-36"exit doors. Kitchen has it's own 36"
exit. (3)-36"exit doors are the minimum required per the occupant load. The maximum travel
distance is less than%the maximum allowable of 200',Table 1016.2.
-a fire alarm system that will include manual pull stations and strobes as required by Code but
will be upgraded to include smoke detection to activate alarms.
-5/8"Type-X gypsum board to be used on all walls and exposed ceilings.
-suspended ceilings in the dining&assembly are class A.
-the common wall between the assembly&dining room will be finished with(1)-layer 5/8"
Type-X gypsum board each side. One side to be sheeted with'A"plywood/osb as part of the
lateral design. The plywood will extend from the floor to the roof sheeting forming a draft stop
&smoke partition(Section 710)as well. The door in smoke partition is to be self-closing with
smoke gaskets. No duct penetrations are anticipated through this wall.
-class B membrane roofing system.
REASON FOR THE PROPOSED ALTERNATE:
The water supply required to support an automatic sprinkler system is not available&
impractical at this rural site. The cost of providing fire sprinklers and a water supply to meet the
NPPA 13 requirements would not allow this project to proceed. The Temple members did not
anticipate a project this large when they started Phase I. Increased enrollment and interest are
now driving this expansion. No further expansion of this building will be possible or is
anticipated.
CONCLUSION:
This proposal follows the guidelines outlined in the State of Oregon"White Paper"dated
February 2016. It is the Temple's intent that the proposed alternate above complies with the
intent of the Code&these proposals will provide their membership safe&shorter paths of
travel with additional exits. Upgraded 5/8"fire code gypsum board throughout the building on
walls and ceilings for added framing fire protection. The enhanced fire alann&detection system
will also provide prompt notification to both the building occupants and the fire department.
Should this proposal be deemed"insufficient"the owner&Architect would consider other
safeguard measures provided they are not cost prohibitive.
END OF ALTERNATE METHODS PROPOSAL
J
