440, <br /> INTRODUCTION <br /> This report details the evaluation of a nonbearing wall assembly in determin- <br /> ing the duration for which it will contain a fire and maintain its structural <br /> integrity during a predetermined test exposure. The test was conducted in <br /> accordance with the American Society for Testing and Materials E 119-88 <br /> "Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and <br /> Materials," Tests of Nonbearing Walls and Partitions. The E 119 test exposes <br /> a specimen to a standard fire exposure controlled to achieve specified temp- <br /> eratures throughout a specified time period, followed by the application of a <br /> specified standard fire hose stream. The results of this test are intended <br /> to provide data to enable regulatory agencies to determine the suitability of <br /> assemblies for use in locations where fire resistance of a specified duration <br /> is required. Any variations from the conditions that are tested may sub- <br /> stantially alter the performance characteristics of the assembly. <br /> The E 119 test method provides a relative measure of the fire performance of <br /> comparable assemblies under specific fire exposure conditions. However, the <br /> standard fire exposure may not be representative of all fire conditions which <br /> may vary with changes in the amount, nature, and distribution of fire <br /> loading, ventilation, compartment size and the configuration, and heat sink <br /> characteristics of the compartment. It does not provide full information as <br /> to performance of assemblies with components or lengths other than tested, <br /> nor simulation of the fire behavior of joints between building elements, such <br /> as wall-wall connections. Although the standard does not contain specific <br /> criteria for judging the impact of through joints or "poke-through" devices, <br /> such as electrical or telephone outlets, it should be recognized that these <br /> components should be evaluated if they constitute a significant part of the <br /> tested assembly. The method does not evaluate the degree by which the <br /> assembly contributes to the fire hazard by generation of smoke, toxic gases, <br /> or other products of combustion, nor the passage of smoke or other products <br /> of combustion through the assembly. <br /> This standard should be used to measure and describe the properties of <br /> materials or assemblies in response to heat and flame under controlled lab- <br /> oratory conditions. It should not be used to describe or appraise the fire <br /> hazard of materials or assemblies under actual conditions. However, results <br /> of this test may be used as elements of fire risk assessment which take into <br /> account all of the factors which are pertinent in an assessment of the fire <br /> hazard of a particular end use. <br /> All test data are on file and available for review by authorized persons. <br /> TEST PROCEDURE <br /> The test furnace is equipped with 10 adjustable gas ports and 10 adjustable <br /> air ports. The sides of the furnace have windows to allow viewing of the <br /> sample while under the fire exposure.
