`r .re,
The University of Georgia
College of Ageteulmret and Environmental Sciences
Department of EntmeoLyy
January 27, 1999
Iiansmedi Walter, President
K—X Industries Inc.
P.O.Box 180
Windsor,SC 29858
Dear Mr.Walter,
We have recently completed our preliminary exa dnatlon of tennhe penetration of FASWALL®,
K-X Aggregate block. We allowed three different groups of subterranean termites free access to
separate 9-an diameter areas on the audits of a K-X Aggregate block. Trite were confined
on the 9-an area using a petd dish base fastened to the blot*with food grade silicone sealant. A
2-mm 0.0.),20-an length of tygon tubing led from the earl dish to a plastic box contalningt-
5,000 termites.Met a two-month exposure period twinges were removed tan the block and the
size of any holes found on the Nook measured.Holes were measured by placing a 1-mm
diameter metal probe Into the hole, maridng the probe on a line perpendicular to the outer wall of
the block on the probe met resistance to furrier penetration(the end of the hole?),removing
the probe, and than recording the distance from the mark to the end of the poi. Holes also
were measured on three separate, randomly chosen 9.cm diameter areas on the earns block that
♦r were not exposed to termite'. The holes In the unexposed areas averaged 4.28 risen deep(N•
32)and In the termite treatment areas 4.78 min(N•32). The difference In the average depth of
holes between treatments gamete and no termites)was not statlsdcally significantly different
Next,we applied,using a hand-held dusting apparatus,powdered fluorescent pigment(DAYOLO
Color Corp.—Blaze Orange)Into the aforementioned holes. Then using a wood chisel and
rubber mallet the holes wen excavated until no more Buorescent pigment was observed. AU
excavations were conducted In a darkened room under 11V light at 385-nm wavelength to more
accurately absolve the pigment. The avenge depth the pigment woe found within the blocks
was 12.3-mm(N• 17)for the no-ternate treatment holes and 9.5-mm(N•20)fortha taints
treatment holes. Again the difference In the avenge depth of holes between treatments was not
statistically significantly different.
Sincerely,
Brian T.Forschler
Assistant Professor
•
413 Biological Sciences Building • Athena,Georgia 30602.2603 • Telephone(706)542-2316 • ha/(706)542-2279
An Patna OppormMEY/A jrm+nive Action In•dtutvo
