The intent of this
rule, though not very clear, is to allow the att~ichment of awnings and carportz to the sidewalls of
manufactured dwellings.

The proper attachment of an awning or carport should comist of the following: The awning or ca~port
rail should be attached with I~ screws dire. oily to each sidewall stud (studs are usually at 16" on center).
Attachment to ~e siding oaly is not acceptable sad we do not recommead attaching rails to sidewalt top
plate~. The singte 1" top plates will easily split out from tho lag screws and nei~er !" or 2" manufactured
dwelling top plates are designed to transfer the roof live loads of the manufactured dwelling or the
awning/carport to the studs. To transfer the loads from the sidewall studs to the ground, the current rules
suggest perimeter pier bloclfin at 8' on center However, ,w, ith the increased ~ight o~ the newer
manufactured dwellings and the ad&ttonal roof load. from tho awning/carport, 4 on center would be more
apprbpriate,, All other attachments should be made according to the awning/carport manufacturer's
engineered plans with special attention paid to the top and bottom pos't connections and ground anchors.

PATRICK D.
