Building Codes Division
15~5 Edgewater NW
Satem, OR 97310
Telephone {503) 378-4133
Fax (503) 378-2322
TDD {503) 378-1358

FEBRUARY 3, 1995

DEPARTMENT OF
CONSUMER AND

BUSINESS SERVICES

SANDRA FREILINGER PLANS EXAMINER
MARION COUNTY BUILDINO DEPARTMENT
285 CHURCZ-t STREET NE ROOM 132
SALEM OR 9/301-3670

RE: AWNINGS & CARPORTS

As we discussed over the phone, OAR 918-510~O50(3) does not prohibit the attachment of awnings or
carports to mannfaemred dwellings, but establishes conditions by which it can be done. The intent of this
role, though not very deal is to allow the atta6hment of awnings and e~'ports to the sidewails of
manufactured dwellings.

Thc proper attachment of an awning or carport sh6uld consist of the following: The awning or carport
tall should be attached with lag screws directly to each sidewoJl stud (~tuds are usually at 16" on center).
Attachment to the siding only is not acceptable andlwe do not recommend attaching rails to sidewall top
plates. The single 1" top plates will essily.split out from the lag screws and neither 1" or 2" manufactured
dwelling top plates are designed to transfer the rOof live loads of the manufactured dwelling et the
awning/carport to the studs. To transfer the loads from the sidewall studs to the ground, the current rotes
suggest perLmeter ~i~t blocking' at S' on c~nter. However,' .vo.,th the lnt;rq~s~,~,, ~e!ght of,.the newer
manufacmred'dwellmg~ and the additional roof load from the awning/CarPort, 4' '~i{~hter would be more
appropriate, All other attachraents should be made according to the awning/carport manufacturer's
engineered plans with special attention paid to the top and bottom post connections and ground anchors.

Regarding your question of which ta~e.8 ptece, deace for the attae2unant of accessory structures to
manufactured dwellings (manufactured dwelling manufacturer s instillation imtructions vs. Oregon
Specialty Codes), the Oregon Specialty Codes take pre~.edeece.

Thar~ you for bringing this issue to ray attention, lWe are currently in the process of re-writing the
manufactured dwelling rules and will attempt to mak~ Wis section more clear and more "usg friendly,"

PATRICK D.
