APPENDIX A

FIELD INVESTIGATION

Two soil borings were advanced at the approximate locations shown on the Site Plan (Figure
2). The work was performed June 20, 1995 under the direction of a geologist from our firm.
The borings were advanced using a trailer-mounted drilling rig equipped with 4-inch
diameter solid-stem augers.

Samples of the subsurface materials were collected using a standard split spoon sampler
(1V2-inch inside diameter, 2-inch outside diameter). The sampler was typically driven 18
inches into the materials at the bottom of the boring using a 140-pound hammer falling 30
inches. Disturbed samples were obtained from the split spoon sampler, sealed in plastic
bags, and returned to our office for examination.

The locations and elevations of the soil borings are approximate and were estimated using
the site plan provided to us by GTE Mobilnet.

The soils encountered in the borings were described using the Un/fled Soil Classification
System summarized in Table A-1 and using the soil descriptors discussed in Table A~2.
Final logs of the borings are presented as Figures A-1 and A-2.
