The intent of this
rule, though not very clear, is to allow the attachment of awnings and carports to the sidewalls of
manufactured dwellings.

The proper attachment of an awning or carport ishould consist of the following: ~,i~ing o? carport
raft should be'attached w~th:lag screws d~ree~y;:~ caches ~ewall s~d:(studs ar~;,nsually :at 14: on, enter):
Attachment to the s~dmg only ~s not acceptable ~ we do not recommend at/ta6.hmg rads to sidewall top
plates. The single 1" top plates will easily split out from the lag screws and neither 1" or 2" manufactured
dwelling top plates are designed to transfer the roof live loads of the manufactured dwelling or the
awning/carport to the studs. To transfer the loa& from the sidewall studs to the ground, the current rules
suggest perimeter pier blocking at 8' on center. However, with the increased~Eeight of the newer
manufactured dwellings and the.additional roof load from the awning/carpo~n;'eenter would:be more
appropriate. All other attachments should be made according to the awning/carport manufacturer's
engineered plans with special atteution paid to ~e top and bottom post cotmections and ground anchors,

Regarding your question of which takes precedence for the attachment of accessory structures to
manufactured dwellings (manufantured dwelling manufacturer's installation instructions vs. Oregon
Specialty Codes), the Oregon Specialty Codas take precedence.

Thank you for bringing this issue to my attention. We are currently in the process of re-writing the
manufactured dwelling rules and will attempt to make this ~ection more clear and more "user friendly."

PATRICK D.
