Department of Environmental Quality
WILLAMETTE VALLEY REGION

August 20, 1990

IRon ~olvi,P.E., P.L.S.
Design and Engineering Unit Supervisor
Parks and Pa~Teation Department
525 Trade Street
Salem, Orego~ 97310

MARION (:;(}LINTY
BUILDING INSPF O'TJON

RE: SS - Detroit State Park

This letter will confirm my meeting with you and Gary Schmidt at Detroit
State Park on August 16, 1990. We ~ to a~m~ss repair of the failing
drainfield serving loop C of the campground. I was requested to me~t with
the state Parks because Marion C~unty's only onsite sanitarian ~as on
vacation.

our investigation revealed that there are five disposal trenches leading
frc~n the distribution box. The top two lines are c~let~ly saturated and
the bottom line has surface wet spots. To make matters worse, asphalt has
been plac~d over the top lines during construction of the program ~..
Since this camping area will be closed on Se~ 4, 1990, until next
spring, it ~ agreed that the bottxx/ tr~ would be abar~toned and a n~w
trenc~ of approximately 100 lineal feet would be installed prior to the
weekend for a te~poraz~ repair. In addition, if the repair was not
succe~fal, the facilities would Jmmmdiately be closed. As discussed, State
Parks will need to contact Marion County Building department and obtain a
repair permit.

As you my know, last s~amne~ there was a meeting that Joe Petrovich of our
staff attended with state park officials where ~lation of new
wastewater facilities to serve the combined flows of the Detroit Park ~as
discussed. The r~nt failure at loop C brings attention to the need to
upgrade the wastew~ter facilities. What is the status of the project to
replace the existing facilities?

Detroit. ltr
CC:

sincerely,

Tom
Envirommental Specialist

Bob Fester, Marion County Building Department
Ga/7 Sc~dt, Silver Falls State Park, 20024 Silver Falls Hwy SE,
Sublimity 97385
File

DEQ/WVR-101 1/88
