The area was devasted
by wildfire in September 2020. This home was affected primarily by fire outside the structures and
resulting smoke, soot and ash inside the home and shop.
The purpose of this testing was to identify potential harmful characteristics of the fire-related residue
left on surfaces in the home, attic and shop. The Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Administration
(Or-OSHA) regulates exposure limits for adults in the workplace. Pollutant limits are also set by the EPA
for air,water and soil concentrations.
First round cleaning was done inside the home and of many of the contents. A lower level of
wipe/vacuum cleaning was done in the attic of the home. No cleaning had been done in the shop. The
air had been cleaned using HEPA filtered air scrubbers for a long period of time prior to this testing.
Limitations
This report makes recommendations based on areas accessible to the hygienist during the sampling
period for the purpose of protecting occupant health and safety. This report does not make
recommendations based on structural damage or potential odor generated from combustion by-
products.
Testing
Testing in the home and shop was done on wipe samples. Tests were taken for soot/char/ash and for 16
pollutant metals. Air tests were taken to measure particulates inside the home at sizes PM 2.5,PM10
and total dusts.
Test Results
Particulates in Air
Testing using two direct read particulate counters were taken in the home. These units read
consistently in EPA's Air Quality Index for Good. This testing confirmed that airborne particulates in the
home are low after surface cleaning and HEPA air scrubbing.
Transforming Safety Culture
