MSS INC
ENGINEERING CONSULTANTS
SURVEYORS
W PLANNERS
June 30, 2021
Attn: Mr. Don Taylor
49930 Santiam Highway
Idanha, OR 97350-9503
RE: Property damage and negative impact on the structures on the site located at 49930
Santiam Highway, Idanha, OR 97350-9503 as a result of wild fires that occurred during the
summer of 2020 around and on the above mentioned site.
Dear Mr.Taylor,
The inspection was made on June 2, 2021, between the hours of 11:15 AM and 1:45 PM. Mr.
Taylor assisted in providing ladder access as required to view various components such as attics
and roofs.
This inspection was made by a structural engineer, registered in the State of Oregon, John
Seaders, PE.
The following structures were inspected for structural integrity:
1. The residence
2. The shop
3. The pumphouse
4. The road
The residence:
a. Foundation cracks. The noted cracks in the Taylor-Syfan report were observed and may
have been affected by heat. The shape of the cracks being narrow at the base and wider
towards to top indicate soil settlement along the wall that has allowed the northwest
corner to settle and the concrete stem wall reflected that stress and cracked. Whether
or not it was the heat from surrounding fires that caused a drying out of the soil more at
the corners than in the center is a question that cannot be resolved. However it is the
drying out of soils at different rates in different locations that creates the stress in stem-
wall foundations. It is possible that the foundation crack, which is minor, existed prior to
the fire events. For this we are dependent on the owner's report.
b. Siding. The siding is Hardie plank concrete siding and it has survived the heat well. The
joint filler material has not fared as well. There is evidence of shrinkage, and in one
place it looks like the caulking has melted. The Back porch which covers the length of
the house and is about 8 ft wide could be considered a heat trap. Nails and screws that
215 N.W.4th Street,Corvallis,OR 97330.
