Argument in Favor:

Your YES vote will provide for student safety at Stayton High School, Sublimity and Mari-Linn Schools; alleviate overcrowding in Stayton schools; increase student access to technology; and protect the community’s investment in the North Santiam School District: Mari-Linn, Stayton, and Sublimity.

SAFETY

The middle school building, cafeteria, and gym at Sublimity and parts of Mari-Linn school have been declared unsafe given seismic activity or earthquakes. A new wing at the present elementary building in Sublimity and a new wing at Mari-Linn will be added to remove students from unsafe structures. The entrance at Stayton High School must be redesigned to allow for proper supervision of visitors and guard against unwelcome intruders.

OVERCROWDING

An additional elementary school is needed in Stayton because all Fourth and Fifth grade students are now forced to attend Stayton Middle School due to lack of room at the existing school. Another school will allow these students to attend a K-5 neighborhood school (decreasing the enrollment at the middle school), and provide enough classroom space for 450 students in each building for projected needs through 2019 (25 students per classroom). Additional classrooms are necessary at the high school to accommodate the current enrollment and provide space for projected growth through 2023 (at 2% growth annually). A larger high school cafeteria, stage and auditorium for the performing arts are necessary, as are improved locker rooms for physical education and athletics.

TECHNOLOGY

Our elementary and middle school students must have access to adequate technology. Additional classroom space in the schools will be properly wired and prepared for computers and other learning technology.

COMMUNITY’S INVESTMENT

Necessary repairs will be made at all school buildings in the district to protect our citizens’ investment, provide space for growth, and improve educational opportunities for all students in the North Santiam School District.
