MEASURE NO. 24-118

City of Stayton

Argument in Favor:

This letter is in support of the Stayton Public Library.

The library is currently operating with the help of its second three year levy expiring in June of 2005. The new levy we are proposing is a four year levy supporting the library, parks and the pool, as does the current levy. We are asking you to approve the new levy now so there will be no gap in services when the current levy expires.

Stayton’s library relies on the levy to help it maintain its current level of hours and services. The levy will, in years two and three, provide funds to do computer replacement and upgrades. Our computers are heavily used by the public and provide a much needed service for their users, so the library works diligently to keep them current and working well.

The Stayton Public Library Foundation is in the process of fund raising for a much needed expansion of the library. The library has become overcrowded by book stacks, and oodles of children at story time and in the summer reading program. The overcrowding is also beginning to make problems for handicapped people to use the facility easily. So, in years three and four of the levy, there is funding to make the library expansion work, in the form of staffing and extra money for the book budget.

The library is a cornerstone of our community; a place where anyone and everyone is welcome to browse and relax and to read and dream. It’s where you can find what you need to know, and what you want to know, or just find some music to take home and listen to for awhile. We all need to be sure we do everything we can to ensure its availability, now and always to everyone, and that it remains the best library we can possibly make it.

Please vote “YES” for your library!!

Sincerely,

Susan Brandt
