MEASURE NO. 24-147

Proposed
Salem Public Library District

Argument in Favor:

WE GIVE EVERY WEEK

PLEASE GIVE YOUR SUPPORT TO THE SALEM PUBLIC LIBRARY

As volunteers at the Salem Public Library, we have each declared that this institution is worth it. We devote our personal time to help the staff complete the thousands of tasks and many special projects that it takes to provide you with library service. Last year, the thousands of hours of volunteer time at our libraries was the equivalent of more than 13 full-time employees. Our libraries have 225 volunteers.

And because we are here, we know that there are limits to what volunteer time can do for our libraries. Opening the doors, putting books on the shelves, and offering programs requires staff and other resources. It costs money to offer this amazing “free” resource to the community.

To keep this resource available, to keep books on the shelves requires your support.

Salem Public Library was created more than 100 years ago by volunteers. Our libraries will continue to be supported by a faithful volunteer program in the future. But the basic framework must be in place to give us libraries to support.

Our community needs:

• Funding that will reopen the central library doors on Mondays. We should have access to our library seven days a week.

• Funding that will put books on the shelves. The book budget has been cut, limiting the number of books and other materials available for research and enjoyment.

• Funding for programs and services that engage children and adults in life long learning.

• Funding that stabilizes the future of the West Salem Branch Library and our Bookmobile.
