MEASURE NO. 24-147

Proposed
Salem Public Library District

Argument in Favor:

Be a Friend to our Library.
Vote YES for a Salem Public Library District.

Our library’s future hangs in the balance.

Friends of the Salem Public Library, formed in 1965, has devoted 40 years to supporting and enhancing this great library. Our investments always pay off.

Salem has benefited year after year from the devotion of a hard-working staff and volunteer team. But it is always a struggle. Funding is always a question. We need the stability and strength that a Salem Public Library Distrct will bring.

We want a library that is open.

We see the 2,500 people who use the library each day. This is a vital community resource for education, knowledge, access to technology, and family fun. This resource should be available 7 days a week.

We want funding we can count on.

Pleading with City Council to preserve library services is an annual tradition for the Friends. We want our energy – and the energy of the staff – focused on providing service and programs to the community. We want the stability that allows for long-term planning to meet ever-increasing community needs.

We want books.

Having books and other materials on the shelves that interest and educate patrons is the essence of a library’s purpose. We need stable funding to restore the book budget and offer the books that fill the community’s needs.

We want programs.

Support for educational and cultural programming, especially for children, is the heart of what the Friends of the Library provide in Salem. We cannot keep up with the increasing population and increasing educational needs. Stable funding will bring more opportunities for children to learn from high quality programs.
