MEASURE NO. 24-155
Salem-Keizer Transit District

Argument in Favor:

Facts about Measure 24-155.

Why is Measure 24-155 needed?

The measure is needed for two reasons: first, to maintain current service, providing 21,000 riders with reliable, safe buses; and, two, to provide limited new services, including limited Sunday service and more frequent buses on busy routes during the week.

It has been 10 years since the Salem Keizer Transit District asked voters to approve a measure for operating costs. Ridership has increased 73 per cent since then. Fuel costs have increased substantially.

Why doesn’t the District just increase fares to raise revenue?

Actually, the District is planning two fare increases over the next five years. But fares must be low enough so that seniors, students and low income riders who depend on the bus can afford to ride.

If you don’t ride the bus, why should you care?

Safe and reliable public transit benefits the entire community, not just those who ride the bus. Buses ease traffic and air pollution. Buses provide affordable transportation for senior citizens, people with disabilities and others who can’t drive. And, especially during difficult economic times, buses help people get to jobs, school and medical appointments.
