MEASURE NO. 24-78

City of Salem

Argument in Favor:

PROTECT OUR CITY FROM BIG MONEY INTERESTS!

Vote Yes on Measure 24-78!

Getting large sums of money for their campaigns gives some candidates a huge advantage over grass roots candidates. But when these well funded candidates become city councilors they are often asked to return the favor and make decisions that directly benefit their campaign contributors.

This is called “conflict of interest!”

THAT’S NOT HOW DEMOCRACY IS SUPPOSED TO WORK!

We’ve investigated and we know:

• There are constant and continuing efforts to CONCEAL BIG POLITICAL DONATIONS that come from development
interests.

• HUGE CHECKS, some as large as $30,000 or even $45,000, have been written by development interests to fund campaigns for Salem mayor and council.

• Sometimes the money is shipped out of Salem and filtered back into local campaigns through other organizations.

• Developer donations have also been laundered through a local model home project into local elections.

• Sometimes developer candidates, or developer ballot measure campaigns, simply FAIL TO REPORT the full amount of developer dollars that they receive.

• The local newspaper FAILS TO PUBLISH even the full amount of those developer dollars that do get reported by the donors, or by their candidates.

Today developers don’t have to declare their huge contributions when they seek council approval for their projects.

SALEM VOTERS DESERVE THE RIGHT TO KNOW when big campaign contributors are asking “their” councilors for a favor.

Measure 24-78 REQUIRES that potential conflicts of interest MUST BE DECLARED.

We need government by the people,
not government by the money.
