Ann Gavin Sample

OCCUPATION: Salem City Councilor, Ward 1; City Council President.

OCCUPATIONAL BACKGROUND: Teacher, retired.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND: Graduate, Colorado State University.

PRIOR GOVERNMENTAL EXPERIENCE: Salem City Council (Eighth year); Council President (re-elected second year); Salem Planning Commission; Salem Parks/Recreation board; Northeast Neighborhood Association board; Salem Neighborhoods, Inc. board; League of Women Voters, former president; Child Health Initiative board; Community Action Agency (Head Start) board; Oregon Housing and Associated Services (Wheels) board.

RE-ELECT AN EXPERIENCED SALEM CITY COUNCILOR WHO WORKS TO SOLVE PROBLEMS FOR US AND OUR CHILDREN. Ann Gavin Sample has:

• Broad-based grass-roots support.

• An open mind and makes decisions only after hearing all the information.

• Sponsored a responsible ballot measure for voter-approved annexations.

• Worked to find reasonable common ground in the community and on the City Council.

Ann Gavin Sample is a City Councilor with a real record of accomplishments for Salem. She voted to:

• Restore funding for the Senior Center, library hours and emergency social services.

• Improve run-down buildings in our neighborhoods.

• Relieve traffic congestion and promote alternatives to vehicle use.

• Regenerate the North Downtown area.

During the next four years, Ann Gavin Sample wants to help Salem make important decisions to:

• Manage growth and development.

• Fund City services such as the library, parks, police and fire.

• Deal with traffic congestion and neighborhood parking.

• Keep our downtown vibrant and healthy.

• Expand positive after-school programs for children.

• Implement the Police Strategic Plan.

I am committed to working directly with you to solve problems related to City services. I walked door-to-door to warn neighbors of flooding in 1996. I pushed to get stop signs and signal lights on busy streets. I worked with downtown merchants on crowded sidewalks in front of their businesses.

I am not a single-issue candidate; I am strong on environmental issues and social services. I regularly attend neighborhood association meetings and believe that we must keep our neighborhoods strong and liveable. We need the support of businesses that provide living wages to help us maintain quality of life in our neighborhoods.
