Sharon L. ROY

OCCUPATION: Reader (Currently: Jacques Barzun’s From Dawn to Decadence; 500 Years of Western Cultural Life; Dorothy Sayers’ Gaudy Night; and Cascade Policy Institute’s Money for Nothing? An Analysis of the Oregon Quality Education Model); Teacher (Piano, remedial reading/math volunteer, foreign language volunteer): Support Person (For Michael, my husband of 23 years; for Clara and Laura, who attend Wheaton College.

OCCUPATIONAL BACKGROUND: Statistical clerk; Library assistant; Landscape designer; Teacher-Taxfunded, independent, home schools, 17 years; Stay-at-home mom, 13 years, with time to hold a small girl’s hand and walk through the Humboldt County fog, the Yuba City heat, the Silverton rain...to the library.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND: The family educates children. Mine enjoyed ideas and knowledge, which meant library Saturday; Presbyterian Church Sunday. That helped me earn one of the portable, full-tuition scholarships to any California college. Five institutions and many college libraries later, I hold an English literature B.A. with a minor in music history, an A.A. in Landscape/Nursery, and teaching credentials.

PRIOR GOVERNMENTAL EXPERIENCE: One of the committed educators who fought forced consolidation of small parent-controlled schools into big, centrally-controlled districts, I published a newsletter, analysed reports, wrote newspaper articles, attended board meetings at school, at district, and at state level, and ran for school board. I continue to expose the failure of Benchmarks, Standards, School-to-Work and the ineffectiveness of the Oregon Quality Education Model.

America’s public libraries are a family education resource.

Where does the Roy Family...

...finally locate the Elizabeth Taylor/Richard Burton movie classic The Taming of the Shrew?

...type a scholarship essay on the latest glitzy software?

...request a statistical report from a Canadian library?

We do all this at our local Silver Falls Library! THANKS!!!
